Ear infections : Causes, Symptoms and Treatment

An ear infection will affect the middle ear, it is the space that is air-filled and it is present right behind your eardrum that comes with the small vibrating bones of an ear. Ear infection mostly occurs in children rather than adults.

Ear infections often go away on their own. The initial treatment can help in checking the problem and managing the pain. Antibiotics can also help in some cases. Recurrent ear infections can result in hearing problems.

Causes of an Ear Infection:

An ear infection happens due to a virus or bacteria in the middle ear. This can happen because of other illnesses like allergies, colds, and flu. It can further cause swelling and congestion of the eustachian tube, throat, and nasal passages.

Swollen eustachian tubes can also cause a build-up of fluid in the middle ear. This fluid can get infected and contribute to an ear infection.

Symptoms of an ear infection:

  1. Discomfort and mild pain within the ear
  2. Loss of hearing
  3. Pus discharge from the ear
  4. Constant pressure from the inner ear

Children can experience the following symptoms:

  1. Pulling or rubbing in the ear
  2. Headaches
  3. Restlessness
  4. Losing balance
  5. Not responding to certain sounds
  6. Fever
  7. Loss of appetite

Treatment:

Infants who are less than 6 months old need the help of antibiotics to prevent the infection from spreading. Children between the age of around 6 months and 2 years usually do not require antibiotics unless there is a severe infection.

Ear infections normally go away without any treatment. The only medication that can help is for the management of the pain. For prolonged and severe cases, antibiotics are needed.
